Londonis not only a city, but also a small world. There is much more here than I had imagined. When I walk around London, I see shops offering goods from various countries. Strangely, there are a large number of parks. Each street has a different name and history. People from different nationalities live on each road. Despite knowing that, it is a delusion. I have occasionally felt sandwiched between streets, as though everything was pressing down on me, like I had been putting in a tiny box. London’s diversity has been there for a long time, but this world was new to me. It made me realise that my world was tiny. I strongly believed that if I came to London that I would become a special person in this colourful city.
I have since, however, unexpectedly become an alien. My nationality does not make me unique, but it is not common in London. Although there are many nationalities here, a young Asian girl is merely a stranger here. Though it is impossible to be quiet in this complicated city, London sometimes seems as silent as death, especially when clouds hang low in the sky. The parks, which are naturally located in middle of the city, create a dreamy atmosphere. They divide the city into many parts, creating another dimension that I find intriguing. It has been an inspiration for my work. In my project, I wanted to graphically describe my emotions. I thought the parks would be perfect because people come and go and there are no buildings, cars, or modern facilities. People go to the parks to relax and forget their stresses. Although they are actually surrounded by a modern city, the parks give them the impression that they are not in London. They are, however, in the same place.
